The Bible clearly tells us that the Lord disciplines those whom he loves.  This can be easy for us to accept from a distance, when we are not under the heavy hand of God’s love, but David writes from the midst of the storm.  Psalm 6 is a raw lament expressing what it feels like to be under the discipline of the Lord.  As a whole, the church has forgotten how to handle the hard moments of life, how to pray real prayers, how to deal with real hurts and real tears.  The words of David in Psalm 6 could not be more timely for us as we learn that the Lord disciplines his children for their good, delivers his children from spiritual darkness, and defends his children from their enemies.
